12MP review: Big boost for tiger conservation

KUALA LUMPUR: Measures to protect the increasingly threatened Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) will strengthened, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this was to ensure ecosystem balance while preserving the environment's sustainability.

He said Malaysia was the only habitat of this subspecies.

“At the same time, enforcement efforts in handling wildlife crimes, expanding protected areas and empowering local communities will be strengthened.

“This is also to protect threatened wildlife such as elephants, orang utan, turtles, gaur and tapir,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when tabling the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) on Monday (Sept 11).

Anwar added that the government would also intensify efforts in expanding Sustainable Development Goals at the localised level, through empowerment of state governments, local authorities and communities.

“Environmental, social and governance principles encompassing policies and supervision as well as support services will be developed to encourage businesses especially small and medium enterprises to adopt sustainable business practices,” Anwar said.

Parliament is scheduled to sit for six days from Sept 11 to table and debate the 12MP mid-term review.
